What Are Barends and How to Replace Them on Your BMX? 0

What Are Bar Ends?

Wondering what those little plastic caps on your bike's handlebar ends are called? They're called bar ends. Also known as handlebar plugs or end caps.

Bar ends can be made from various plastics, rubber resin, nylon, or aluminum. They are typically sold in pairs and often come included with new handlebar grips.

Why Are Bar Ends Important on a Bike?

They may seem like small parts, but they serve a few key functions:

  1. They keep you safe by holding grips in place, so your hands won’t slip during tricks.
  2. They cover the sharp edges of the handlebar to protect your hands from cuts and scrapes.
  3. They protect your handlebar ends from getting damaged during falls.
  4. They prevent damage to walls or floors when you lean your bike against them – no more scuffed garage walls.

Which Bar Ends Should You Choose?

Most bar ends come in a standard size that fits regular handlebars. Whether you go with aluminum or plastic is up to you. Aluminum ones are tougher, but they cost a bit more. In terms of color and brand – the choice is yours.

Popular picks include ODI bar ends or CORE bar ends – both sell really well. You can’t go wrong.

How to Replace Bar Ends on a BMX

1. What Tools Will You Need?

You might need a drill or screwdriver, a small or long bit (if the bar end is deep inside), a flathead screwdriver, pliers, and depending on the bar end type – an Allen key or rubber mallet.

2. Step-by-Step Guide to Removing Old Bar Ends

  • Remove the existing bar ends.
  • If they’re visible and made of plastic, you can pry them out using a flathead screwdriver or pull them with pliers.
  • If they’re stuck deep inside, drill into them carefully and use the drill or a screwdriver to pull them out.
  • If you're using aluminum bar ends, loosen them with an Allen key and remove.

Most bar ends are standard size, but double-check before starting the replacement process to make sure they fit your bars.

3. Installing New Bar Ends

Nylon Bar Ends

Slide them into place and gently tap with a rubber mallet. Make sure they sit firmly in place – don’t hammer too hard.

Aluminum Barends

Slide them in, tighten with an Allen key until they lock into position. Check for looseness – and you’re done!

How Often Should You Replace Barends?

Any time they’re damaged, worn out or no longer doing their job – swap them out for new ones.

Planning to change your grips too? Here’s how...
