A bike stem connects the fork to the handlebar, and comes in two main styles: topload and frontload.
A stem changes how your BMX feels on the bike. Topload stems lift the handlebar higher, which gives a more upright position and helps with manuals. Frontload stems place the bar lower and slightly forward, something taller riders often prefer for more room during tricks.
When choosing a stem, the most important thing is matching the clamp size of the stem to the diameter of your handlebar. Most freestyle BMX bars use a 22.2 mm clamping area. If the sizes don't match, the bar will not fit securely.
Installing a stem is simple. You just need an Allen key, tighten the faceplate evenly and check that the handlebar stays straight when you load your weight into it.

FAQ, BMX Stems
What is the difference between a front load and a top load BMX stem?
A front load stem keeps the handlebar lower and slightly further forward, which feels quicker and more aggressive. A top load stem lifts the bar higher, giving a more upright and comfortable position, especially for riders who like extra height under their hands.
Which BMX stem is better for tall riders?
Tall riders often choose front load stems for a bit more reach, but many prefer top load stems because they raise the handlebar and keep the back straighter. There is no strict rule, it depends on comfort and the type of tricks you ride most.
How do I know if my BMX stem fits my handlebar?
The stem must match the handlebar’s clamping area. Freestyle BMX bars almost always use 22.2 mm. Some oversized setups use 25.4 mm. If the sizes do not match, the bar will not clamp safely. Always check the numbers before buying.
Does a BMX stem fit any fork?
Most BMX stems fit forks with a 1 1/8 inch steerer tube, which is the standard in freestyle BMX. If you have an older or non-standard fork, check the steerer size before ordering a new stem.
Do I need special tools to install a BMX stem?
No special tools, just a good quality Allen key. It lets you clamp the stem to the fork and tighten the faceplate around the handlebar.
What stem length should I choose?
Most BMX stems have a reach between 48 and 53 mm. Shorter stems make the bike react quicker, longer stems feel calmer and more stable. Choose what matches your riding style.
