BMX Gyro – a small part that makes a big difference.

A gyro allows you to spin your BMX handlebars a full 360 degrees.

This way, your brake cables won’t tangle or get stuck, letting you spin the bars freely and pull off tricks with ease.

BMX Rotor / Gyro – Full Handlebar Rotation Freedom

The BMX rotor, also known as a Gyro system, lets you spin your handlebars a full 360° without twisting or tangling your brake cables. This means you can pull off tricks like barspins and tailwhips without worrying about cables getting in the way.

Why choose a BMX rotor / Gyro?

  • Full freedom of handlebar rotation
  • No tangled brake cables
  • Enables advanced tricks with ease
  • Fits most BMX frames with rotor mounts

A rotor lets you spin the handlebars 360° without tangling the brake cables.

BMX Rotor FAQ

What is a BMX rotor and how does it work?

It’s a mechanism mounted at the head tube. The upper cable runs from the brake lever to the rotor, and from the rotor comes a dual lower cable to the brake arms. This way, the cables don’t twist during a full handlebar spin.

What is a U-Brake 990 and will it fit?

A U-Brake is a rear “U”-shaped brake mounted on two U-Brake 990 mounts (posts/pivots) on the frame. “990” is the common name for this standard. If your frame has these posts, you can use a U-Brake 990 with a rotor. Without them, you can’t mount a U-Brake.

Is a rotor necessary for barspins and tailwhips?

Not required, but it makes tricks easier because the cables don’t tighten. Alternatives include brakeless setups or a single cable with limited rotation.

Will a rotor fit my frame?

You’ll need gyro tabs at the head tube (or a stem/headset adapter) and U-Brake 990 mounts (posts) on the rear. Without these, the system won’t work properly.

What parts are needed to install a gyro?

Rotor (upper and lower plate), upper cable, dual lower cable, gyro tabs or adapter, rear U-Brake, cable stops and bolts. Cable lube is also recommended.

How do I choose the correct cable lengths for a rotor?

It depends on your handlebar height and stem. Get slightly longer housings and cut them to size — this prevents pulling when spinning 360°.

Does a rotor work only with a rear U-Brake?

Yes, rotors are designed to work with the rear U-Brake (990). They are not meant for V-Brakes or disc brakes.

How should I route the cables to avoid rubbing?

Use wide curves without sharp bends, linear housing, and zip ties that aren’t too tight. After installation, check for free handlebar rotation.

The brake pulls unevenly or rubs — how do I fix it?

Balance the tension of both lower cables with the barrel adjusters and set a small clearance in the rotor. Pads should not rub, either straight or when the bars are spun.

How do I maintain a rotor and cables?

Clean and lightly lube the cables, check for cracked housing or frayed wires. With heavy use, replace cables every season or when resistance increases.
