Replacing a BMX bike crankset is simple, and you can easily do it yourself. If you want to see the full process, check out our step-by-step tutorial where Paweł shows how to remove and install a crankset the right way.
The crankset on a BMX bike plays a very important role.
It drives the bike forward and supports your weight on the pedals during tricks. A crankset takes heavy loads, so manufacturers use strong chromoly steel to make sure it survives street riding, jumps and failed landings.
Most riders choose crank arms between 170 and 175 mm, but the perfect length depends on your style. Shorter arms are popular in street riding because they give more leg clearance when grinding or spinning. Longer arms offer a bit more stability and power when you ride fast or prefer longer cranks for your setup. Whatever you choose, make sure your crankset is compatible with your bottom bracket and your BMX pedals.

FAQ – BMX Cranksets
What’s the difference between a 1-piece and a 3-piece BMX crankset?
A 1-piece crankset is made from a single bent tube and is common in entry-level bikes. A 3-piece crankset has two separate arms and a spindle. It is stronger, stiffer and easier to service.
What does 2-piece and 2.5-piece mean in BMX cranksets?
A 2-piece crankset has one arm fixed to the spindle. A 2.5-piece works like a 3-piece, but the spindle is factory-joined to one arm, which makes installation simpler.
How do I choose the correct crank arm length?
The most popular length is 170 to 175 mm. Shorter arms give more clearance for street tricks, while longer arms help with speed and stability.
Which pedals fit my BMX crankset?
Most freestyle BMX cranksets use the 9/16 inch pedal thread. Only 1-piece cranks typically use the smaller 1/2 inch thread, so always check before buying.
Can I replace a BMX crankset myself?
Yes, with basic tools. For 3-piece cranks you need an Allen key and sometimes a crank puller. If you’re unsure, visiting a workshop is the safer option.
