A one-piece BMX crankset or a three-piece BMX crankset – commonly referred to as 1pc cranks and 3pc cranks. There are also 2pc cranks and models marked as 2.5pc.

Just for the record – a bicycle crankset consists of metal arms to which the pedals are attached. It’s part of the drivetrain, connecting the pedals to the bottom bracket. Aside from the difference in construction, 1pc and 3pc cranks also differ in price – one-piece cranks are significantly cheaper.

One-piece BMX crankset construction

As the name suggests, this crankset is made from a single piece of metal. This design makes it very strong and reliable. You’ll typically find these cranks on more affordable BMX bikes.

Three-piece BMX crankset construction

A three-piece crankset consists of two crank arms and a bottom bracket spindle. The arms are connected to the spindle with a dedicated bolt. These cranks are usually found on slightly higher-end BMX bikes.

How to match BMX pedals to a BMX crankset?

Always check the pedal description to see if they fit a 1pc or 3pc crank, and pay attention to the thread size. In BMX bikes, it’s usually 9/16", while one-piece cranks may have a 1/2" thread.
