When buying a BMX bike, you probably focus on its looks, frame geometry and size, the material it’s made from, weight, crankset, brakes, and other specs. But have you checked what kind of tires it has?
Do you even know what makes a good BMX tire?
Apart from size, do BMX tires matter to you?
For us, they do. In our opinion, tires are an important part of a performance BMX bike, especially since, statistically, alongside pedals and grips, they’re the parts most often damaged during tricks.
Our top list: 6 key features of a good BMX tire
1. BMX tire sizes and the importance of a proper fit
BMX tires come in three sizes: 16”, 18”, and 20”. The right size depends on the rider’s height and the BMX frame size. 16” – for kids up to 130 cm tall. 18” – for riders between 120 and 150 cm. 20” – the most popular size, for riders 145 cm and taller. Remember, the tire must fit the frame, fork, and rim size.
Experienced riders often have preferences for tire width, sometimes running a thinner tire in the rear and a wider one in the front. BMX tire widths range from 1” on kids’ bikes to 2.5” on adult/youth bikes. Stock BMX bikes on our site usually come with 2.3”–2.4”.
2. BMX tires tough as nails 😄
Durability is crucial. You shouldn’t be wondering whether an obstacle will destroy your tire. Ever landed sideways thinking, “there goes another hundred bucks”? Choose solid tires. Steel bead tires are a bit heavier but roll better on the street, especially in bad weather. Kevlar bead tires are lighter and foldable—handy for carrying a spare. Some BMX tires also have thicker sidewalls for extra reinforcement.

3. What tire pressure should a BMX have?
PSI (pounds per square inch) indicates tire pressure. A harder, fully‑inflated tire rolls faster and reduces the risk of pinch flats. Landings in BMX can be rough, so the right pressure depends on personal preference. After a season of riding, you’ll know what works best for you. BMX tires can have a wide PSI range; our shop offers models up to 110 PSI.
4. Trusted BMX tire brands
Anyone can make a tire, but not everyone knows how to make one for tricks. BMX tire manufacturers understand the loads their products endure. Often, pro riders help design and test these tires before they hit the market. Always check the brand behind the product.

5. Tire tread
Choose tread based on your riding style. For park and street, a low‑profile tread rolls faster and grips better on hard surfaces. Tread patterns vary—choose what looks good to you. For dirt riding, a deeper tread gives better traction on loose terrain.
6. Design – style matters
We like variety and hate boredom. For us, BMX tires are like clothing—they come in different colors and tread patterns, letting you stand out. Match them to your frame, mix with pedal and grip colors, or run different colors front and back. We have BMX tires in many colors—check for yourself how awesome your bike can look! See them here 👈.
