BMX sprocket guide. How to choose the best one for your bike? 0

You need to buy a new BMX sprocket but aren’t sure where to start.

Or maybe you have an idea, but there’s still that one question hanging in the air…

How to choose a BMX sprocket?

First, it’s worth knowing that sprocket size simply means the number of teeth it has. So, if you see “25T sprocket,” it means it has 25 teeth. The more teeth, the more distance you cover with one pedal revolution. For this guide, I’ll divide sprockets into three categories:

  • Small sprockets: 25T to 28T
  • Medium sprockets: 30T to 33T
  • Large sprockets: 36T to 39T

The sprocket affects your speed, pedaling efficiency, and bike control. A poorly chosen sprocket can make it harder to achieve your riding goals. Here’s what to consider when choosing one:

1. Riding style: If you like riding fast on flat, smooth terrain, a larger sprocket with more teeth will work best. You won’t need to pedal as much, making the ride less tiring. Choose between 36T and 39T.

If ramps and tricks are your thing, go for a smaller sprocket. It will help you accelerate quickly and maintain better control — between 25T and 28T.

If you ride a mix of styles, a medium sprocket (30T to 33T) is a good compromise.

2. Riding location: Where do you ride most? For skateparks and ramps, a smaller sprocket is better for control and quick acceleration for tricks. For street or off‑road trails, a larger sprocket will help you maintain speed more easily.

3. Wheel size: Your sprocket must match your wheel size for proper drivetrain function. It also needs to be compatible with your bike chain.

4. Riding level: Your skill level matters too, especially if you’re a beginner. In that case, choose a medium sprocket — it’s easier to balance speed and control.

5. Personal preference: In the end, it’s about what works for you. Test different sizes and decide based on your own experience.

6. Expert advice: If you’re still unsure which sprocket to choose, contact us and we’ll help you find the right one.
