BMX Handlebars. Types, Sizes & How to Choose? 0

If the questions below have crossed your mind, here’s a quick guide worth reading.

BMX Handlebar – How to Choose?

But let’s start from the beginning, step by step.

What are the types of BMX handlebars?

There are two main types: two-piece handlebars and four-piece handlebars.

What’s the difference in BMX handlebar construction?

A two-piece BMX handlebar is made from one long bent tube with an added crossbar for reinforcement. A four-piece BMX handlebar consists of two shorter bent tubes connected by two straight crossbars, with the lower tube mounting into the stem.

They also differ in mounting style. A two-piece bar is mounted with two bolts, while a four-piece bar is mounted with four bolts. Both can be fitted to either a frontload stem or a topload stem. Importantly, both types come in two clamp sizes – 22.2 mm (standard) and 25.4 mm (oversize). Your bar clamp size must match your stem clamp size – for example, a 22.2 mm handlebar will NOT fit a 25.4 mm OS stem.

What should a BMX handlebar be like?

Both types are good and work well on a BMX – the choice depends on your personal preference.

What are BMX handlebars made of?

Handlebars are usually made from aluminium or reinforced Cr-Mo steel. Aluminium is light but less durable, while steel is heavier but stronger. For BMX freestyle, steel bars are most common – weight is reduced as much as possible without sacrificing strength. Aluminium is more popular in race BMX where weight matters most. For beginners, steel is recommended for durability.

What sizes do BMX handlebars come in?

Two main measurements: height (8–10") and width (28–30"). Your height should guide your choice – taller riders usually set bars higher. Handlebars should not hit your chest or knees for comfort. Width should also match your personal preference.

Handlebar rise and position on a BMX

The rise is the angle of the handlebar relative to vertical. A higher rise (more upright) provides better control and is better for beginners. A lower rise (angled more towards you) gives a more aggressive position suited to advanced riders.

How to remove and replace BMX handlebars?

You’ll need the right tool – usually an Allen key.

  1. Loosen the bolts securing the stem to the frame.
  2. Loosen the bolts holding the handlebar to the stem.
  3. Remove the handlebar from the stem.
  4. Install the new handlebar.
  5. Tighten the bolts securing the handlebar to the stem.
  6. Tighten the bolts securing the stem to the frame.
