A 22-inch BMX still looks and feels like a BMX, just with a little more room and larger wheels. Those larger wheels roll over rough ground more easily and give the bike a calmer feel at speed.
It is a popular choice for taller riders who feel cramped on a 20-inch BMX. Height is not the whole story, though. Some riders simply prefer the extra stability, especially for trails, dirt jumps and pump tracks.
A 22-inch BMX is worth considering from around 165 cm tall. Treat that as a starting point, not a hard cut-off.
Between 165 and 175 cm, body proportions and frame geometry become particularly important. Check the top tube length, marked as TT, before choosing a bike. Two riders of the same height may not feel equally comfortable on the same model.

Being tall does not automatically mean that you need 22-inch wheels. If you enjoy a quick, nimble bike for spins and technical riding, a 20-inch BMX with a longer top tube may still suit you better.
A 22-inch BMX gives you more room and a more settled ride. It makes sense when a regular 20-inch bike feels cramped or you simply prefer larger wheels. Compare actual bikes rather than choosing from wheel size alone, as the geometry can change the way each model feels.

The wheel size may be the same, but that does not make the bikes identical. Some 22-inch BMX models are built mainly for dirt and trails. Others are better suited to mixed riding, including pump tracks, skateparks and short rides around town.
Check the full specification before you buy. Looks and wheel size only tell part of the story.
Yes. You do not need previous BMX experience, provided the bike suits your height and the type of riding you want to learn. Before buying, think about where you are most likely to ride. A bike chosen for dirt jumps and pump tracks may feel different from one designed with more technical riding in mind.
A simple wheel swap will not do it. A standard 20-inch BMX frame and fork will not usually have enough clearance for 22-inch wheels. The change would also affect the bike’s geometry and brake position. If you want to ride 22-inch wheels, choose a frame and fork made for that size.
Some will, while others will not. Tyres, inner tubes and rims must be the correct 22-inch size, and the frame and fork must be designed for the larger wheels. Handlebars, stems, cranks, hubs and other components may use familiar BMX standards, but always check compatibility before ordering.
That depends on the individual bike. The pegs must fit the axle diameter, and there must be enough axle length to secure them correctly. Check the hub specification and the manufacturer’s guidance before choosing a set.
Yes, it can handle short rides to a pump track, dirt spot or nearby skatepark. It is still a freestyle bike with a low saddle and no gears, though. A city bike or mountain bike will be more comfortable over longer distances.
Your bike arrives around 90% assembled. Before riding, you will need to fit the pedals, saddle and handlebars. Some models also require the front wheel to be installed.
A BMX is built for tricks and demanding riding, but it is not indestructible. Crashes, missed landings and regular use all place stress on the components. Check the bike often and inspect the frame, fork, handlebars and wheels carefully after a heavy impact.
Wear a properly fitted skate helmet and protective pads. Even a trick you know well does not always finish with both wheels exactly where you planned.
