What size BMX bike should you choose?
Start with the rider’s height. For a smaller rider, look at BMX bikes with 12″, 14″, 16″ or 18″ wheels. For teenagers and adults, compare 20-inch BMX bikes by frame length as well as wheel size. RMDBike also has larger BMX bikes with 22″ wheels.
BMX size chart by rider height
TT means top tube length, the length of the frame’s upper tube. It is a separate measurement from wheel size. A BMX with 16″ wheels, for example, does not have to have a 16″ top tube.
| Rider height(approx.) | Wheel size | Top tube (TT) |
|---|---|---|
| 90–110 cm | 12″ | around 12″ |
| 110–125 cm | 14″ | around 14″ |
| 120–135 cm | 16″ | 15–16″ |
| 135–150 cm | 18″ | around 18″ |
| 145–160 cm | 20″ | 19.5–20.25″ |
| 150–168 cm | 20″ | 20–20.5″ |
| 160–175 cm | 20″ | 20.25–20.75″ |
| 175–183 cm | 20″ | 20.75–21″ |
| 183 cm and over | 20″ | 21″ and longer |
| from around 165 cm | 22″ | 21.75–22.25″ |
This chart is a starting point. The height ranges overlap, and the exact fit depends on the bike’s geometry and the rider’s proportions. Check the measurements and sizing advice for the model you’re considering.
A 22-inch BMX is another option if you want a larger bike. Its suggested height range overlaps with 20-inch BMX bikes, so compare the individual models before deciding.

Before you ride your new BMX
Take your BMX to a professional bike workshop for an initial service before the first ride. This is a paid service and is required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid. Keep the receipt or other proof that the service was completed.
Your bike arrives around 90% assembled. The workshop should complete or check the assembly, including the pedals, handlebars and, on some models, the front wheel. It should also check the brakes, tyre pressure, chain, wheels and bolt tightness. Bring the instructions and warranty terms supplied with the bike.
Check the BMX regularly once you start riding it, especially after a crash or heavy landing. Bolts can loosen and parts wear with use. Wear a properly fitting helmet and protective pads too.
BMX bike FAQ
Can you learn tricks on a 20-inch BMX?
Yes, if the bike fits the rider. Wheel size is only part of that decision: compare the top tube length and the geometry of the models you like. A smaller rider may find that an 18-inch BMX fits better.
Do I need a different BMX for street and skatepark riding?
Many complete BMX bikes can be ridden in both places. Once you have found a size that fits, compare the frame geometry, weight and components. Riders have different preferences, so there is no single top tube length reserved for street or for the skatepark.
Does a complete BMX come with a brake?
Many complete BMX bikes come with a rear brake, but check the specification of the model you choose. Do not assume that every bike is supplied in the same setup.
Can I use a BMX for everyday riding?
A BMX works for a short trip to school or the skatepark. On a longer journey, the low saddle, smaller wheels and single gear may be less comfortable than a bike made for travelling further.
How often should I check my BMX?
Check the tyres, brakes, chain and bolts before riding. Look over the bike again after a crash or heavy landing. The initial service at a professional workshop must be done before the first ride; later service intervals depend on the manufacturer’s instructions and how much you ride.
