20-inch BMX bikes: which top tube length suits your height?
A 20-inch BMX is the standard wheel size for freestyle riding and can suit riders from around 145 cm tall. The wheels are the same size across this category, but the frames are not. To find a bike that fits, check the top tube length, usually marked as TT.
A younger rider moving up from an 18-inch BMX, a teenager and an adult may all ride 20-inch wheels while needing different frame lengths. A shorter TT feels more compact; a longer TT gives the rider more room.

20-inch BMX size chart by rider height
Use your height to find a starting range for the top tube length. The ranges overlap because body proportions and riding preferences also affect how a BMX feels.
| Rider height(cm) | Wheel size(inches) | Top tube TT(inches) |
|---|---|---|
| 145–160 cm | 20″ | 19.5″–20.25″ |
| 150–168 cm | 20″ | 20″–20.5″ |
| 160–175 cm | 20″ | 20.25″–20.75″ |
| 175–183 cm | 20″ | 20.75″–21″ |
| 183 cm and over | 20″ | 21″+ |
This chart is a guide based on RMDBike’s experience. Check the geometry and recommended rider height of the individual bike before ordering.

Before your first ride
Before riding your new BMX, take it to a professional bicycle workshop for a paid initial service. This is required to retain the manufacturer’s warranty. Keep the receipt or other proof of the service.
Your BMX arrives around 90% assembled. Fit the pedals, handlebars and saddle as instructed. Some models also require the front wheel to be fitted. Read the manual and warranty terms supplied with your bike, and have the workshop check that everything has been assembled and adjusted correctly before you ride.
A BMX is made for tricks and jumps, but its parts can loosen or wear. After the first few rides, check the bolts, wheels, chain, brakes and headset again. Keep checking the bike regularly, especially after a crash or hard landing.
FAQ about 20-inch BMX bikes
Is a 20-inch BMX suitable for a beginner?
Yes, if it fits the rider. Twenty-inch wheels are standard on full-size freestyle BMX bikes, but the top tube length matters too. A younger or shorter rider may feel more comfortable on a BMX with 16-inch or 18-inch wheels.
What should I look for in my first BMX?
Start with the wheel size and top tube length. Once you have found a bike that fits, compare its cranks, bearings, wheels and frame material. A three-piece crankset, sealed bearings and a double-wall rear rim are useful features if you plan to ride regularly.
Can I learn tricks on an entry-level BMX?
Yes, provided it is a freestyle BMX suited to the rider’s size and the tricks they want to learn. Check the manufacturer’s intended use for each model. A low price alone does not tell you whether a bike is suitable for jumps or skatepark riding.
Can I ride the same BMX at the skatepark, on street and on dirt?
Some complete 20-inch BMX bikes suit a mix of riding styles. Check the intended use of the model before buying, especially if you plan to ride dirt jumps or larger ramps. As you gain experience, you may find that you prefer a particular frame geometry, tyre or component setup.
How often should I check or service my BMX?
Give it a quick check before each ride and inspect it again after a crash or hard landing. Check the tyres, brakes, chain, wheels, bolts and any play around the handlebars or cranks. How often it needs another professional service depends on how much you ride and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
What if my BMX starts creaking or develops play?
Stop riding and find out where the noise or movement is coming from. The headset, cranks, pedals, wheels or bearings may need attention. If you cannot identify the problem, ask a professional bicycle workshop to check it before you ride again.
