Once you have checked the size, look at the individual bike. Compare its frame, fork, cranks, wheels and brake, and check what kind of riding the manufacturer recommends. Two BMX bikes with 16-inch wheels can have different parts and feel different to ride.
If your child wants to learn tricks or ride at a skatepark, choose a model intended for freestyle riding. A bike that fits the rider and suits the place they want to ride is a better starting point than choosing by colour alone, however tempting that colour may be.
Before your child rides their new BMX, take it to a professional bicycle workshop for a paid initial service. This is required to retain the manufacturer’s warranty. Keep the receipt or other proof of the service.
The bike arrives around 90% assembled. Read the supplied manual and warranty terms, and fit the parts specified for your model. These usually include the pedals and handlebars; the saddle or front wheel may also need fitting. Have the workshop check the assembled bike before the first ride.
